Although Bentley is keen on metering out glimpses at a snail’s pace , British auto mag CAR managed to get a hold of a batch of photos of the highly anticipated new “Grand Bentley”. Under development with the code-name Project Kimberley, the new Bentley is slated to replace the aging Arnage sedan at the top of the company’s line-up and do battle with the Rolls-Royce Phantom. With technological input from its sister companies under the Volkswagen auto umbrella, the as-yet unnamed Grand Bentley promises to take a big step forward from the Arnage, which still carries its mechanicals and platform from the days when the automaker was under the same roof as Rolls — not in direct competition. The spy shots reveal mesh grilles, LED lights, a retractable hood ornament (like the Phantom’s) and a swooping roofline reminiscent of the classic 50’s-era R-Type Continental . Looks pretty sweet, and we’ll probably get an even better glimpse as the car’s unveiling later this summer approaches with the pace of…well, a speeding Bentley. But every kingdom must have a king, and in the late-’80s and early-’90s this was it: the JBA Dominator GTA. Commissioned from J Bittle American by Ford in 1989, the Dominator took the pony car to new heights, installing what was likely the first independent rear suspension on a Mustang along with a long list of features that differentiated this custom muscle car from stock. The Lightning 351 engine features the iron heads from the GT40 and the intake manifold from a Cobra. A custom exhaust and aircraft-derived fuel system kept it breathing, while 17-inch rims obscured race-spec disc brakes at all corners. The list goes on and on, and during its reign, the Dominator received plenty of media attention. The Mustang was featured on the cover of Road & Track in November 1989 in a shoot-out against other factory-backed custom muscle cars and went on to star in various hot-rodding and Ford-specific magazines. The JBA even has its own website , which will transfer to the buyer willing to pony up the $34,500 asking price for this piece of Mustang tuning history. It may not be particularly adept at saving fuel - owner Chris Lentz of Jackson, Michigan, says it burns one to five gallons of kerosene per minute (though presumably it could also run on biodiesel like Jay Leno’s EcoJet ) but we aren’t aware of any other hybrid vehicles that can put out 2700 horsepower at 516 miles per hour. While half of the 2005 Ford F-150 STX’s drivetrain consists of the stock FoMoCo 4.6-liter V8 and four-speed automatic transmission, the truck’s coup de grâce is certainly the 1950s-era Czechoslovakian Motorlet M-701 turbojet mounted discreetly in the bed. The 728-pound jet engine is reportedly capable of punching out 1,962 pounds of thrust at 15,500 RPM. Coupled together, the two engines can push the truck down the quarter mile at 103 miles per hour and up to a measured top speed of 140 mph, though it could likely go faster with a slightly modified mounting arrangement. One buyer in England, reported to go by the name Peter Saywell, apparently wanted to get his hands on the limited-edition Zonda Cinque , but after all five sold out, he commissioned the factory in Modena to create the special one-off you see here. Instantly discernible from other Zondas by its unique paint job and four-abreast tailpipes, the Zonda PS reportedly packs a 650 hp version of the Mercedes AMG V12 powering its stablemates - some fifty horses more than the Zonda F but a little shy of the Cinque and track-bound R versions - driving through the sequential transmission developed for the Zonda’s highly anticipated successor. With its exclusive specifications, the Zonda PS will be worth even more than other versions of the Pagani supercar, which are already trading well over their list prices on the open market. Rendered Speculation: Mazda preparing sub-Miata MX-2?

Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case with the Mazda MX-5, which - retractable hardtop option notwithstanding - the Japanese automaker has always been careful not to spoil the core elements of the MX-5. So we’ll take reports that Mazda is preparing an even smaller MX-2 with a grain of salt. But a small one. According to the speculation, a future MX-2 would come in noticeably smaller than the full-size Miata, and therefore require smaller engines. Something between 700cc and 1.6-liter engines are reportedly in store, with a turbo at the top end delivering 160 horsepower. No word on layout, but we’d grudgingly expect a front-drive set-up when the purported MX-2 is unveiled as early as 2012. More Audi "Ur-Quattro" revival rumors surface, debut expected in 2010
Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Audi , Rumormill Rumors of Audi’s plan to resurrect the Ur-Quattro continue to persist , with Auto Motor und Sport reporting that the highly modified A5 is due to arrive sometime next year. According to the German pub and coinciding with earlier reports , Audi plans to bring the curb weight down to around 3,000 pounds by using scads of aluminum along with polycarbonate windows in place of their glass counterparts. Further weight reductions will come from a lightweight set of 19- or 20-inch wheels and carbon ceramic brakes, while an active rear spoiler, magnetic-ride suspension system and a raced-out interior are rumored to be part of the package. Naturally, Audi’s all-wheel drive system will be the centerpiece of the reborn Ur-Quattro, but there’s still plenty of questions surrounding the coupe’s powertrain. Audi has supposedly decided to nix the idea of fitting its 4.2-liter V8 and will instead use either a new, twin-turbocharged V6 (odd, considering the automaker put all its efforts into creating a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 for the new S4 and A6) or possibly the 2.5-liter five cylinder currently fitted to the TT-RS in a historical nod to the new Ur’s ancestry. If AMuS is to be believed, expect output somewhere between 300 and 425 hp - and there’s also talk of a hybrid variant that would allow for a 20-mile electric-only commute (something about a snowball comes to mind…). Regardless, if the Ur-Quattro does come to fruition, expect it to debut sometime next year to coincide with the original’s 30th anniversary, with pricing set considerably north of the current S5.
